Makes 5 to 6 apples
5 to 6 of your favorite eating apples* (the apples should be cold)
5 to 6 craft sticks
1 (14 oz.) package individually wrapped caramels, unwrapped
2 T. milk or water
Small candies or chopped nuts (optional)
Remove the stem from each apple and press a craft stick into the apple.
Cover a baking sheet with a non-stick silicone mat or buttered parchment paper.
Place the caramels and milk in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave 1 minute at a time, stirring after each zap of the microwave, until the caramels have melted. Let cool for 2 or 3 minutes.
Roll each apple in the melted caramel until well coated. If necessary, spoon caramel over the apples to evenly coat. Roll the apples in chopped nuts or little candies and then set them on the prepared baking sheet. Chill in the refrigerator for 15 to 20 minutes.
* Use un-waxed apples only – the kind you can get from your local farmer or pick-your-own orchard. Otherwise, the caramel will fall right off the apples!
